DISCERN THE TIMES: THE MEN OF ISSACHAR

DISCERN THE TIMES: THE MEN OF ISSACHAR

This blog’s content comes from Dave Metcalfe and corresponds to episode #55 of The WealthBuilders Podcast.

“Of Issachar, men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, 200 chiefs, and all their kinsmen under their command.” (1 Chronicles 12:32, ESV)

It’s one thing to understand the times—and we are living in times that need understanding! However, it’s a completely different (and powerful) thing to know what to do. This is what the Book of 1 Chronicles briefly tells us about The Men of Issachar. But who exactly was this tribe?

Issachar himself was the fifth son of Isaac and Leah. His name derives from the joining of the Hebrew words for “man” and “wages.” The way I see it, Issachar came with a gift in his mouth. When he spoke, there was value, or currency. So, when his four sons and descendants formed the tribe of Issachar, it was almost as if influence was in this tribe’s DNA. They were also very politically savvy. History tells us that they knew when to change their allegiance from Saul to David.

When the Promised Land was portioned out, the men of Issachar received 16 cities and their respective villages. Moses referred to them as a “strong donkey” situated in a beautiful land. And it was a compliment! Here’s why:

Donkeys in the middle east are typically strapped down with supplies. It’s a major way that people in the community receive resources. So, the tribe of Issachar was compared to a donkey because they were abundant and resourceful for the sake of Israel.

When we walk in His wisdom, God will show us how to discern the times. He will reveal what we should do on large scales and small scales, much like the Men of Issachar. God also equips us with resources! He brings us into situations that have what we need, and then He’ll show us where to go to be a blessing with our supply.

The Keys of Heaven

“And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:19, NKJV)

Think about what a key does. In short, it opens something that was previously closed. They can give us the opportunity to experience resources that we haven’t experienced before. Jesus gave us the ultimate key. It unlocks heaven itself! We have the authority to unleash the Kingdom of Heaven on the earth.

The implications of this are insane. God has a specific plan to profit and grow each of us. When we abide by that plan, we get to partake in His divine plan to restore all things. With our keys, we get to help earth look a little more like heaven.

 Biblical Encouragement, Leadership

Profit and Growth

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” (Psalm 1:1-3, ESV)

Psalm 1 likens a righteous person to a tree. Let’s personify this tree based on the context of Psalm 1. This tree is planted in its season. It came into existence at an intentional time in an intentional place, and knowing this, it can discern the times and what it should do. The tree is constantly nourished because it stays connected to the Lord. That connection makes it fruitful and prosperous, too.

Billy Epperhart often describes how God wants to help us grow an orchard of fruitful trees. In other words, God gives us the power to build wealth and have influence so that we can be fruitful in our service to others. Through this fruitfulness, we unlock the Kingdom of Heaven on earth as well.

However, you can’t have good fruit without a healthy root system. Here’s how I view our lives in the context of a tree. It takes time to develop the roots of integrity, character, and knowledge. Then you get to the trunk. This is where strength and confidence are built—it’s where the tree becomes sustainable. A strong trunk helps the tree withstand any threats, and it prevents it from crumpling under its own weight. Lastly, the branches extend outwards. These branches are the capabilities that hold the fruit of our calling. They are the part that feeds others.

God wants to give you discernment for the times you’re living in and what you should do. The key that Jesus has given you (the one that can unlock Heaven) is your primary tool to operationalize that mission. Lastly, through walking in wisdom, God will establish you as a fruitful tree.

Guest Bedroom Ideas

Guest Bedroom Ideas

Sweet Tea Properties has purchased a variety of holdings for a variety of different reasons and outcomes. One of our first acquisitions was an older home that needed to be totally remodeled (fix and flip) and we recently sold it for a substantial profit. We learned a lot of lessons and today I want to talk about finding the purpose for a house/room/area before you begin looking for paint colors and design features. I like to spend some time walking through a house and imagining what the next owners will be doing in each room. I do this with each property as a whole, but also with individual rooms and outdoor areas.

In our Coastal Cottage property we had a very “interesting” man cave room that was formerly the garage. I knew that was not the best purpose for the room, but it took me a while to decide which direction to take. I ended up with a multi-generational guest room (possible adult child or elderly parent) because it was separate from the other bedrooms, had its own bathroom and could easily have its own private entrance. Once the purpose was set, I had good direction and was able to move on into the designer elements–my favorite part.

Once the purpose was set, I had good direction and was able to move on into the designer elements–my favorite part.

We removed all the hunting trophies and replaced the worn carpet, but after some consideration, we decided to keep and paint the acoustic ceiling (Sherwin Williams Alabaster White). We painted the walls the same as the rest of the house (Sherwin Williams Repose Gray) and we updated the bathroom, again, to match the rest of the house. Many decisions were much easier after the purpose was set. For example, to change out the acoustic ceiling would have been expensive, but with the purpose being set  for a possible long-term adult, it made sense to keep it for absorbing the noise from a personal sound system or television.

This is just one of the many lessons we learned along the way and are still learning as we develop even more properties. We would love to hear your thoughts and ideas at info@karenconrad.net. Send us a note and check out my 15 Remodeling Tips for Under $500.

Remodeled Kitchen Ideas

Remodeled Kitchen Ideas

The kitchen is often everyone’s favorite room in a house. It is definitely a place where family members congregate around the countertops to hang out before, during and after a meal. If you are considering a kitchen remodel, take into consideration the gathering times that are shared in a kitchen and make space for them. The kitchen may involve food prep, but it also involves lots of fellowship—it is a place people like to be. No matter the culture, there is something special about the activity of a kitchen.

Were you wondering what Scripture has to do with a kitchen? Well, it has a lot to do with the kitchen and actually every part of your home. When I think about the kitchen and about Sweet Tea Hospitality, I am thinking about laughter, fun, and enjoying wonderful food and drink. I also find it quite interesting that God uses the word taste in scripture. In Psalms, David writes:

‘Because of you, I know the path of life, as I taste the fullness of joy in your presence. At your right side I experience divine pleasures forevermore!’ Psalms 16:11 TPT

God is telling us that we can taste the fullness of joy. It reminds me of some great memories from places I’ve visited and holiday meals prepared at our own home. Of course, the food was good but what I remember most is how it made me feel. When people say they enjoyed coming to your home it’s about the hospitality and how you made them feel. It certainly is about tasting the food but it’s more about bringing God into a home and people being able to taste the fullness of joy.

Taste and See,

Fireplace Ideas

Fireplace Ideas

Hospitality is a big part of showing people the love of God. My favorite place to show hospitality is in a room with a fireplace. I love fireplaces and I don’t know about you, but if there’s a place I want to cozy up and feel relaxed it is near a fireplace. Did you know, it’s actually scriptural for us to have a fireplace and to invite people over who may be strangers or new acquaintances.

The people who lived there showed us extraordinary kindness for they welcomed us around the fire they had built because it was cold and rainy. Acts 28:2 TPT

This is talking about a physically cold time and I know all about that from growing up in Minnesota. I was a cheerleader in high school and Minnesota  was very very cold on game nights. We would ride home in the back of a school bus and by the time I got back to the school, I was teeth-chattering cold. My dad was there to pick me up and he always had a fire in the fireplace when we got home. He would put me right next to the fire then bring me a cup of hot chocolate or apple cider. That made me feel so loved and it created a memory that I have carried with me all my life.

I believe this scripture is also talking about when people’s hearts are cold.

Guests in your home may have gone through a difficult season and simply need to feel the warmth and love of God. Biblical hospitality can involve welcoming guests into your home who have cold, sad hearts that need to be warmed. Spend some time gathering around the fireplace, talking about the Lord and creating beautiful memories with hospitality.

Gathering round,
